Per the title it speaks for it's self, so I opened up the link and was told that in written form that I could up grade to Explorer 9 edition for XP but when I opened the link I learned that I could download Internet Explorer 8.
So I dug a little deeper, found all kinds of pages in Microsoft indicating that I or should I say "We" can add or upgrade our Windows 7 to Explorer 9 only after upgrading to Explorer 8.
What prompted me to decide to upgrade to Explorer 9; well a couple of weeks ago I turned on my now near 5 year old Acer Laptop which run Window Xp Sp3 Media Center ( still haven't learned if it is Xp Pro Media Center after all this time) after not having turned on the old girl for over a month.
Well she was not her usual cherry self took 10 minutes to boot up and complained like crazy. After 3 forced shut down and starts the old gal decided that I really wanted her to behave so stopped arguing except for Internet Explorer 8. after I downloaded a bunch 15 of the latest Security etc updates from Microsoft for Xp.
Where this was most contrary as far as locking up was in the Non Administrator User Account that it kept locking up. Knowing that when Microsoft came out with 8 my old Internet Explorer 7 had the same kind of irritations after Microsoft released the Beta 8 a couple of years back in preparation for Windows 7 so I figured that this was happening again.
Well it didn't stop locking up and started doing so in my Admin Account also. Thus I decided to restore my Internet Explorer to original default settings. As over the last couple of years I have added and deleted tool bars like and raging ape.
I had been getting some freeware for a project that kept wanting to get me to add truck load of search sites which I thought when asked if I wanted to decline the search bars that I could and they loaded them anyway.
Much to my irritation I had to dig them out of ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS in the administrator account.
Well thing got progressively worse and I was consonantly using that wonderful tool Task Manager to get the damn programs to turn off or clear when getting this PROGRAM IS NOT RESPONDING and would not even close or exit locking up the computer or page.
Last night TASK MANAGER LOCKED UP AND STOPPED WORKING???? Dang it all in my limited user account.
Now understand something I am a heavy user of this laptop as I travel a good bit with it all around the world as such it is my main computer. I have an external 160gig hard drive that I load all the documents on when I decide to reinstall the operating system when the old girl starts getting up-it-ty.
It has been near 2 years since I did s, and kept her running good by careful defraging.
A few months ago I decided that it was time to do some up grading of the hardware of the computer so increased the memory from 1 gig of 533 that Acer installed to 2 gigs. of 667 memory which is a lot faster memory and more of it.
Additionally I decided as I was running out of room on the C-partition of the 80gig. IDE hard drive so got a new hard drive 120gig. and using my Spotmau Disk I did a Disk to Disk Clone of the hard drive which included all partitions.
I had enough room to move the D partition using Aronis Disk Director so I could increase the size of the C partition to 45gig from 32 gigs. Made a couple of more partitions also to which I created more page files on as my memory had increased.
Though I purchased a second 2 gig. 667mhz memory chip I forgot to install it when home in Texas, I further failed to bring it with me to install it at a later time.
These up grades will give me a total of 4 gigs of memory though the system maybe 32 bit. the video card will still use it's share.
Well now I really wanted a 320 gig hard drive for the upgrade but decided to settle on the purchase of a 160gig as the final upgrade of the IDE hard drive.
Understand that I am also moving all the garbage hidden under all the rewrites of data on the C-partition and no mater how many times you do a disk check even in SAFE MODE are you are not going to get all the junk off the disk.
Things were getting really bad so I reinstalled Windows Explorer 8 which when uninstalled allowed me to use 7, until 8 was downloaded and installed. This took an hour of time plus to do via wifi in a hotel room.
Reinstalling 8 solved the problem of hanging in my Admin. account as it is little used but did not correct the problem in the user account of primary use my limited account nor did it solve the problem of Task Manager locking up and going into failure.
Now everything is working real well in my limited account and I did not have to reinstall the operating system or swap out the hard drive ( Keep the 1st new hard drive with me, fully formatted with the first disk to disk clone just in case of a failure of the installed 160 gig drive. Smart thinking you agree)
How did I do this I deleted the Limited User Account and all files after moving all documents and short cuts to programs loaded on the D partition.
Created a new user account and am using it now with out the garbage I had loaded on the new hard drive.
Trust you learn something from this and Microsoft does not appear to be interested in giving us Xp users access to Explorer 9 now it is in full release but 8 with the Windows Live Package is a little better than before.
As always I will post this on Twitter and Facebook and maybe some news en zine will pick it up and expand my readers for me.
